FENCES AND HEDGES.... PRIVATE PROPERTY!

PRIVATE PROPERTY!

Our lots are among the smallest in the city and I do not want to donate one square inch to the city for its idea of what is politically correct. The safety issue can easily be accommodated by having a locked gate with a city issued lock that would permit emergency personnel quick and easy access. Good fences make good neighbors. I want the option of privacy without the city demanding that my property be on view to any passers by. In Europe many beautiful neighborhoods have high front fences, but with wonderful winding sidewalks and attractive streetscapes maintained by the home owners. We do not need the cookie cutter mentality of city planners to extend onto our PRIVATE PROPERTY!

Fences and Hedges ...Let 'em know how you feel!

Tonight at the LUPC meeting @ Oakwood Rec Ctr 7pm

On the agenda is a hearing for a fence @ 612 San Juan that has been
singled out by LADBS Code Enforcement and cited as being out of
compliance.

This fence is one of at least 10-15 fences on this block alone that
would be deemed non-compliant.

Should LUPC be addressing this issue on a single case basis?
Should LUPC be addressing this issue at all?

Without a policy in place that has been vetted and approved by not only the VNC Board
but also by the Community as a whole this issue should not be addressed at this time.

Over height fences and hedges are throughout all of our neighborhoods.
Leave them alone!

Fence/Hedge height law is UNCLEAR and thus, UNENFORCEABLE

...LEAVE THE FENCES AND HEDGES ALONE!!

Indeed!

First of all, I'd like to point out that the law which LADBS is attempting to enforce applies to all of those fences/hedges which are NOT included in the Venice Specific Plan (all of those fences and hedges can legally be over 4 feet).

But more importantly- I'd like to point out that for all of those people not exempted by the Venice Specific Plan, THE LAW ITSELF AROUND THIS ISSUE IS UNCLEAR.

The law contains a dangling modifier, and as a result, it remains unclear if it is the FENCES or the RAMPS which cannot be over 4 feet in height.
Since this has never been challenged in court, LADBS continues to UNCONSTITUTIONALLY and SELECTIVELY enforce whatever is most convenient for them at the moment.

Some Venice residents have suffered discrimination and threats from unfriendly neighbors because of this law.
...For neighbors who want to quietly spit at other high-fence neighbors, apparently all it takes is one call to LADBS, and you soon get a threatening letter which will put a LIEN on your property while everyone else in the neighborhood gets to enjoy their fence with impunity.

Fences and Hedges

Land Use and Planning will hear a case regarding the request for a variance for the over height fence at 612 San Juan Avenue tonight at the Oakwood Rec. Center at 7PM. Please come and show LUPC and the VNC that we support individual's right to have a high fences.

fences and hedges

as a resident of the oakwood section of venice for 11 years, and i repeat the oakwood section of venice i fail to even begin to understand why the members of LUC/VNC are having such a difficult time understanding and supporting the SUPPORT FOR VARIANCE ON FENCE HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS. do any of you people live in oakwood? are you confronted on a daily basis with either drugs, gangs, prostitution, and now what has become the local RV park for venice either one or all of the above on any given day.
as a resident, land owner, taxpayer, and someone who heartfully cares about the community not be able to feel safe for myself as well as my family? this area of venice is what it is. i dont see who, what or why anyone or committee of people should decide what you can and can not do in order to feel safe, sound and have a bit of privacy within your own home.
i can not in any way find a reason why anyone should be telling a venice resident and specifically an oakwood resident to take down or reduce in size what they deem necessary to make them feel safe. i would suggest you spend your time speaking to the LAPD, PACIFIC DIVISION and ask them their opinion on living safely in the oakwood section of venice. many of these officers
patrol oakwood on a daily basis, why? i guess they have nothing better to do.

michael rosen

High fences

When Venice becomes as safe as Manhattan Beach then I'll take down my fence. Until then, it should be up to me as to how I want my front yard to look and what I need to do to feel safe. I recently put up a new fence and considered a cute, white picket fence that would have exposed my whole front yard to the street but changed my mind when my ladder was stolen as I went to get a hammer at the side of my house. I also remembered the Christmas wreath, decorations and bike that have been stolen. I put new plants and an umbrella with chairs in my front yard and I'm sure they'd be gone in no time if they were not behind a locked gate. If you're annoyed because you can't gaze into my windows and enjoy the ambience of my yard as you drive or walk by, too bad. Venice is not a cookie-cutter place where we all have to look the same. If you don't like the look of high fences, by all means, take yours down. Just leave me alone!

FENCES AND OAKWOOD---what are you thinking?

Oakwood is a pocket community under the Umbrella of Venice and our needs are different and distinct.

The needs and the aesthetics of those in Oakwood differ substantially and radically from the cottage areas south of California Ave and from the more traditionally safe suburban family area east of Lincoln.

Oakwood has historically been made up with low income H.U.D housing and low income multi unit dwellings where drug crimes, prostitution and other criminal activity have not only flourished but maintained a certain level of acceptably amongst "surrounding" neighbors and law enforcement who were satisfied to have the crime contained within the distinct geographical boundaries of Oakwood. On any given day in Oakwood there is crime and a combustible environment that serves as the ignition of violent crime

Indeed, we have inherited this ongoing R.V problem along with the drug and homeless problem because the perception is that this is the profile of our Oakwood.

We should not have to have our community astthetic be dictated from neighboring communities who appreciate a different asthetic and who live at arm’s length from all the problems.

We are law abiding and community conscious tax paying element of Oakwood and we are pioneering a crime free, safe environment. We should not be penalized for this

The same way that Soho, the East Village, Downtown LA and Bergmont Station area evolved. The aesthetic of Oakwood was dictated by safety concerns and it has created a progressive style unique to it’s own that is directly responsible for the resurgence in the area.

The council and the committee need to do more to unite the community rather than divide it over such trivial matters as HEDGES AND FENCES.

Preservation of our urban landscape

Should we allow the City to demand that Venice's landmark hedges that have stood for years, often decades, now be removed? These help cleanse our air, protect our children and shade our homes. Whereas L. A. traditionally shows little respect for our past, Venice now has the chance to become a leader in defending historic preservation of our urban landscape. How could we fail to seize such an opportunity?

Overheight Fences

Overheight Fences like Gay Marriage is such a non
Issue Wedge Issue, why in the heck would anyone
care? Unless you live on the Walk streets
I cannot for the life of me understand why
this issue has even been brought up?

I've seen such abuse of power by members of the
community, Crack Dealers, Venice Organizers who
oppose High Fences... Most of which are not even
property Owners or long time residents...

I made my fences legal nearly a quarter of a
century ago because I was turned into Building
and Safety by my Crack Dealing neighbors...
Thanks, City of LA for making such abuse of the
system and facilitating it with my tax dollars.

Venice is supposed to be the "Free thinkers"
Paradise, but it's looking more and more,
you are Free to think as long as it's what
the "Venice Obstructionists" want you to
think.

Fences and Hedges Should Be At Owner's Discretion

AMEN!! ...Look, as long as you aren't creating a nuisance by encroaching on City Property, or creating something which is just plain ugly- what harm is it causing to have a 6 foot fence or hedge?

I've actually contacted the Councilman- and would be willing to circulate such a petition- one that would allow property owners to come to permanent consensus on what the height that THEIR fences and hedges can be.

If you'd be interested in supporting such a measure, please e-mail me at stevekerver@yahoo.com with your name.

2124 WALGROVE AVE fence is a nuisance fence

this fence takes over the sidewalk, creating a deadly blindspot for pedestrians and the cars who can't see them.

2124 Walgrove is in Mar Vista

2124 Walgrove Avenue is in Mar Vista and thus not in Venice. The formula for street addresses is that: East is even and so is South, making North West Mounties (and addresses) odd fellows. This applies in almost every city, although there are exceptions like San Pedro, which like Venice was once a separate city and chose an numbering scheme opposite of that chosen for standardization.

2124 Walgrove

I looked into a similar situation on a residential remodel on Carleton around the corner from this property that built and landscaped out to the curb eliminating any sidewalk for ever. It turned out that the City never owned the right of way, it was an alley that got turned into a street so they never saw the need for a sidewalk. That is the most serious part of the problem, that the City building dept. doesn't think that every street should have sidewalks. How else are people who walk supposed to avoid traffic? We (the public) need to take back the rights of ways to insure that we get safe sidewalks on all streets.

Google Map

Is this the corner you're talking about here:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=2124+Walgrove+Ave,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90066,+...

It does seem to be strangly right up to the street. What happened to the sidewalk on Victoria? It seems like the fence extends past where the sidewalk should be... Paul T.

Yes Paul T. 2124 Walgrove is

Yes Paul T.

2124 Walgrove is right across the street from the Middle School. I wonder how the property owner got away with taking over the sidewalk.

The height of the fence also exasperates the problem. A pesdestrian cannot see the cars and the car drivers don't bother to check pedestrians, because the fence does an excellent job of keeping them away from view.

2124 Walgrove... how about crosswalks or stop signs?

Yes indeed this fence does appear to go over the property line, and eat-up city property where a sidewalk was or should have been. I dont think the height is an issue though. It looks like a legal height fence to me.

If you are sitting in a regular car (ie: not an suv), I'd bet that even a legal height fence, on top of a curb, and atop the additional rise of a normal yard, would block your view of pedestrians, especially children.

If you REALLY want to help this intersection, how about a crosswalk or a stop sign? How about a street light?

Our neighborhood isnt perfect, but if you are really concerned about children from the middle school crossing safely, lets try to think of constructive solutions that will really make an immediate difference, rather than divisive ideas that dont really help the situation and turn neighbor against neighbor.

Thanks!

don't u think a little

don't u think a little trimming of the fence would be cheaper than stop signs and street signs?

the swallowing fence of 2124 walgrove overwhelms. there is a white paint on the street where the sidewalk should be.

I am not concerned only for children.

I am concerned for pedestrians, which includes dog walkers and to prevent deadly car accidents. I'd rather prevent disaster than risk it in a society with costly healthcare and frequent litigation.

Petition to keep existing fences and hedges?

Have you heard of anyone starting an organized petition to keep existing fences and hedges?

I believe existing fences and hedges should be allowed to remain...

Lets reach an accommodation with everyone in the community.

thanks

Contact Bill Rosendahl, your LA City Councilman

Rumor is he shares the views of property owners who want to keep the expensive fences they built, usually without knowing about this stupid law.

Good idea

I think this is a great idea and but no one has started the effort yet. I would like to see a Venice wide petition to ask that existing fences and hedges be legalized. This could be done on a block-by-block bases like what was done for the Overnight Parking District. ..Paul
