Crime in Oakwood
[copy of a letter to Councilman Rosendahl and submitted for posting here by a stakeholder that wished to remain anonymous]
"I have been a renter on the corner of 6th and Brooks in Venice for 2.5 years. I grew up in Thousand Oaks and spent my many years living in Hollywood - then, later in Santa Monica. I've lived abroad and on the east cost. My point is I have experienced many different cultures, neighborhoods, and lifestyles. When I moved to Venice, I certainly knew I would be subject to a more lively environment. However, being aware of the property costs, I never thought I would be fear for my safety. I have never seen anything like what goes on here. It is truly uncivilized.
During my time here I have witnessed/experienced the following:
- a police/AFT raid on my residence
- a shooting death in front of my door on Thanksgiving Day
- weekly gunfire (last week a shooting on the corner of 6th and Indiana)
- daily drug deals

crime in Oakwood
The police say, and neighbors confirm, that the surveillance cameras are working.
Police and statistics all say say that crime is down in the Oakwood area. I wonder if that merely means that there is less 'reported'crime.
my corner has been quiet for over 6 months now, so that is what I see, but I live under the cameras eyes
Some of us are going to visit the video monitors in the near future

CCTV?
Anyone know if they've considered using CCTV to help keep the area around Oakwood park safer? Apparently using this approach at MacArthur Park has been successful.
