AB2501
SM Councilmember and Candidate for re-election Kevin McKeown has met with Assemblyman Ted Liu to dialogue about AB2501. Last summer, Assemblyman Liu introduced this bill that would require SM to monitor the idling of turbine (jets and turbopropeller) aircraft for a full year commencing in Jan. 2007. The City of Santa Monica officially opposed AB2501 primarily because it was an "unfunded mandate." As an unfunded mandate, the state would require SM to conduct the data collection without providing a funding source. The bill passed in the assembly but did not make it out of committee in the senate. Assemblyman Liu is committed to reintroduce the bill in the next session. According to Councilmember McKeown, "We agreed that gathering data more scientifically correlated with the ongoing AQMD study data, and funding the study so the burden didn't fall solely on Santa Monica taxpayers, were both important improvements." We applaud Councilmember McKeown for reaching out to Assemblyman Liu to work on resolving the City's reservations regarding AB2501.
Changes in Staff at the SM Airport
After the resignation of former SM Airport Director Jeff Mathieu, Airport Manager Bob Trimborn has been appointed new Airport Director and his position of Airport Manager has been eliminated.
Supervisor of Airport Noise and Operations, Matt Majoli, announced that Stelios Makrides has replaced retiring Ted Walters as the new Noise Specialist. Mr. Majoli said the best way to register a noise complaint is to call the Airport Noise Hotline at (310) 458-8692. The noise office is staffed M-F. Even though data on a noise event is collected by the noise office in real time, the altitude and flight path are not available from the FAA until the next day. Therefore, the noise office usually responds to a complaints within a couple of days unless logged over the weekend. See http://santa-monica.org/airport/n_administration.aspx for a complete list of Airport Staff.
