trash in venice

i am sick and tired of ALL OF THE TRASH in venice. it has become overwhelming and disgusting. i am not sure how it got so bad, but every day i go out, i spend the entire time picking up trash. we need more trash cans, and we need to make sure people do NOT litter. it is NOT okay. many times it is the homeless (as i see them do it - leaving beer cans and crap all over the place), but many other times it is those people visiting our neighborhoods on the weekends. i hope that it is not our locals that are trashing our own home. it is disgusting and needs to stop.

what is happening to our beautiful beach?

Food Waste on 4th and Indiana

Every single day the North East corner of 4th and Indiana is the site of illegal food dumping.

We have called the city and they asked (very sarcastically) if we thought they should post an LAPD officer there all day.

The corner is stained with grease. Its so bizarre... who is doing this?

I know trash in VB is a bigger issue, but this is so specific, and so indicative of a bigger issue... that being the general notion that littering or dumping is not an issue anyone really cares about.

i blame the city, the

i blame the city, the merchants and society as a whole (or, at least the society that does not live here in venice). i have lived on pacific avenue between venice and mildred for several years. i have seen people dump their trash out the window as the leave venice, or simply leave it in the gutter. yes, the homeless leave trash as well. part of the problem is the complete absence of any trash receptacles on pacific avenue (and other parts of venice). the other part of the problem is a society that tolerates this behavior. who teaches their children to litter like this? it angers me as much as the noise pollution every weekend. would it hurt LAPD to place an officer or two on pacific avenue to issue citations to the myriad of music blarers, and motorcyclists with bikes loud enough to set off car alarms? i imagine the city could make a lot of money issuing these citations. back to the trash...i imagine the only people profiting from the crush of tourists every week are the vendors and street performers. could a tax be levied? or some sort of volunteer program be implemented for them to contribute to the cleanliness of the neighborhood? i have seen cleaning crews in downtown los angeles and hollywood. they aren't entirely effective, but they are better than nothing.

thank you for enjoying my rant.

You're blaming the wrong people for this problem

I grew up in Venice, and the problem is not the "tourists".

The problem is that the City and County don't clean or empty the trash cans they place on the boardwalk and on the beach regularly enough in the summer time.

Venice Beach gets more people than Disneyland every year - but the local merchants and the local government spend their time finding ways to screw each other out of making a living instead of improving things.

It is really easy to ban incense burning and send cops after homeless dudes. God forbid they'd send one of their union working sanitation engineers out twice or three times a day to haul away the trash. Or god forbid the merchants start a BID to hire the homeless guys to pick up trash and keep the place clean.

The retail sales tax from the boardwalk is a massive benefit to the area, and the jobs created by tourism are a boon as well. The problem is not people, it is a malfunctioning government and business community.

This trash thing has been happening since I was a little boy riding my skateboard around the boardwalk.

In fact, it was A LOT WORSE in the 1980's and 1990's compared to now.

Instead of blaming the people who come to share in your cool 'hood, try finding out which lazy son-of-a-bitch in Rec and Parks or the Bureau of Sanitation needs to get his crew's asses in gear.

Try forming a BID amongst the vendors to split the cost of permanent boardwalk trash pcik-up people.

If it is so important to you, do something about it instead of trying to find an easy scapegoat.

I agree, what do you suggest be done to rectify the problem? I see people dumping fast food bags out of their vehicles on Windward every weekend. Over the holiday weekend I reminded a large family that they were leaving their children's dirty diapers on the beach as they were leaving. There are trash cans every few feet on the beach, is it so hard to walk 2 feet to put the diapers in the trash can?

Something we can all do is pick up a couple of pieces of trash per day. As I walk through my neighborhood, I pick up the free floating trash in the streets and on the sidewalk. Then I put it into the city trash containers in the alleys. It's a start.
Call Arturo Pina at council district office 310-568-8772 and ask him for help. Form an adhoc committee in the Venice Neighborhood Council and work to get proper trash pickup in Venice.
