GRVNC Outreach Committee Minutes, December 13, 2003

 

  1. Held the first Outreach Committee Meeting since GRVNC was certified on Dec 13th.
  2. Brainstorming session facilitated by Todd Medrano, a GRVNC stakeholder.
  3. Attending: Tom O’Meara, Sheila Bernard, Todd Medrano, Dennis Hathaway, John Davis, Lydia Poncé

 

Minutes:

 

1)    Committee Goals:  Build membership and communicate effectively

2)    Question:  Why should stakeholders join?  What would you say to get somebody involved? 

a)    GRVNC is their voice and so they should become involved

b)    Issues that matter most:  traffic, housing, development/planning

c)     Other issues that can be impacted:  empowerment, environment, neighborhood character, group coordination, cross-cultural networking,

3)    Question:  How can we approach/find people?

a)    Lists already produced:  lists made by governments, "Walking Man", Website, Press Release, Public Radio, Community Signs, Telephone, House Meetings/parties, bulletin boards, mailed newsletter

4)    Question:  How can we approach/find organizations?

a)    provide a forum for their presentations

b)    create agenda of common issues among groups and present them to the board

c)     community fair

5)    Question: Which organizations?

a)    non-profit, churches, sierra club, Venice Community Coalition, PTA, faculty at schools, Ballona land trust, Venice Chamber of Commerce, AKDA, Boardwalk groups, boys/girls club, St Joeseph's, Family Clinic, Parks and Rec, Police

6)    Question:  What has worked in the past?

a)    Web site, public tables, door to door, phone, email

7)    Question:  New Ideas

a)    graphic emails, targeted mailings / mapped out, get commitment from district reps to maintain/enhance contact with their districts, define issues to present, craft themes for monthly communications

8)    Question:  How can the Communications Officer improve ?

a)    get support/help from others,  give communication deadlines to people, get cross-cultural (use spanish language)

9)    Question:  What should be Communication Officers priority?

a)    Website!

10)           Action Items:

a)    Get a GRVNC rep to go to C-PAB (board), develop themes for townhall, define stakeholders (bylaws committee), register boardwalk vendors, table at farmers market
